Zombie Apocolypse

Ok, well, not quite. But I kept thinking that as I was photographing with my roommate at the old North Carolina Finishing Company factory in Spencer, NC. It wasn’t all that long ago that this place kept the town alive. Now it looks as though it’s been sitting there for an undeterminably long amount of time. I’m not really sure why so many of the buildings have been leveled, and why they left the paperwork everywhere. I always find that so astonishing about abandoned sites: it always seems that things are left as though everyone is going to come back into work on Monday.

Also on this site was what appeared to be an old school. Of course by now the place has been vandalized, but that just makes the experience all the more interesting when you step inside now.

Comfort Food

For as long as I can remember, my mom made this amazing chili. It’s not like the kind of stuff I typically find around here… where chili is something you put on hot dogs along with cole slaw. Instead, this hearty concoction of beans, ground beef, and corn in a tomato base is a meal all on its own, and makes what chili means to me. It’s one of my favorite things to eat when I want something comforting and nostalgic, especially when the days are cold, though it’s equally good as the weather warms up, as it has here lately (and then dropped back to cold… what is going on with this weather?!).
